Renewal and payment



 Student members who are unable to continue their studies due to a new type of coronavirus infection (COVID-19) will be exempted from the 2020 membership fee.


Student members who are unable to continue their studies due to a new type of coronavirus infection (COVID-19) will be exempted from the 2020 membership fee.

This is for students and graduate students who have applied for the "Emergency Student Support Handout for Continuing Students" offered by the Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO). Those who join this year will also be exempted from the membership fee for the year 2020.

To apply for the exemption of the annual dues, please notify us the following information at the contact address below (by either e-mail, postal mail, or fax).

(1) Name
(2) Date of Birth
(3) Affiliation
(4) Postal Address
(5) e-mail address
(6) A copy of your student ID card or a certificate of enrollment (valid for the current year)
(7) Description of the difficulty in continuing your studies and proof that you have applied for the "Emergency Student Support Handout for Continuing Students"
(8) If you are living at a different address from (4) above, please provide your contact information (address, phone number, email address, etc.)

*Application will be accepted from June 1, 2020 to March 31, 2021.
*If the annual dues for 2020 have already been paid, your application will be applied to the dues for 2021.

 Membership fee waivers for members affected by the 2019 severe rains in northern Kyushu and Typhoons 15 and 19


The Linguistic Society of Japan will continue to exempt its members who were affected by the heavy rains in northern Kyushu and Typhoons 15 and 19 in 2019 from paying membership fees for the year 2020, as in 2019.

The applicant's place of residence does not matter if the application is based on the fact that the damage caused by the heavy rainfall in northern Kyushu that occurred in 2019 and Typhoons 15 and 19 continues in FY 2020. Those who join this year will also be exempted from the membership fee for the year 2020.

Exemption of the Annual Membership Dues for Those Affected by the Heavy Rain in Northern Kyushu, Typhoon No.15 and No.19



We express our deepest sorrow for those who suffered from the heavy rain in northern Kyushu, typhoon No.15 and No.19. The Board of the Linguistic Society of Japan has determined that the annual membership dues for 2019 are exempted from those members who have suffered from these disasters.

The application will be accepted regardless of the current address of the member, AS LONG AS some proof of the damage by them. This policy also applies to new members who plan to start their membership as of the fiscal year 2019.

Exemption of the Annual Membership Dues for Those Affected by the Hokkaido Eastern Iburi Earthquake



We express our deepest sorrow for those who suffered fromthe large-scale earthquake that hit the Southern part of the Hokkaido Prefecture.


The Board of the Linguistic Society of Japan has determined that the annual membership dues for 2018 are exempted from those members who have suffered from this earthquake.


The application will be accepted regardless of the current address of the member, AS LONG AS some proof of the damage by the earthquake is provided.


This policy applies to new members who plan to start their membership as of the fiscal year 2018.

We express our deepest sorrow for those who suffered from the two recent natural disasters: the large-scale earthquake that hit the northern part of the Osaka Prefecture and the heavy rainfall that struck the Western part of Japan.

The Board of the Linguistic Society of Japan has determined that the annual membership dues for 2018 are exempted from those members who have suffered from either one of the two natural disasters.

The application will be accepted regardless of the current address of the member, AS LONG AS some proof of the damage by these disasters is provided. This policy applies to new members who plan to start their membership as of the fiscal year 2018.

How to Pay


Annual membership dues are as follows.
  • Student members:JPY4,000
  • Regular members: JPY7,000
  • Sustaining members: JPY10,000
  • Supporting members: JPY10,000


Payment methods


In Japan
You can pay membership dues in either of the following two ways.
a) Bank transfer
Bank transfer is the preferred method of payment. Please contact the LSJ Office for the detail of the account information of the LSJ.
b) Giro Postal Transfer

Outside Japan
Members located outside Japan may use the following payment methods. They will receive an invoice from the LSJ in April, which should then be returned with payment.
