Symposium (November 17th): Linguistic theories threatened by AI -- from the perspective of semantics

In formal semantics, researchers have used logic as a tool to analyze natural languages, and have naively believed that they are conducting the study of “meaning,” and that the result of these studies should directly contribute to fields such as AI. However, recent studies of AI, especially Deep Learning, have started to cause ripples within the field of linguistics. These studies have suggested that in fact, AI processing may be the more efficient way to analyze meaning, rendering logical analyses of little use. Additionally, linguistic phenomena that have not been treated (or could not be treated) with linguistic theories might now be successfully due to AI’s use of highly developed vision/learning technology. What does “meaning” mean in the AI world? Can the field of semantics and its linguistic theories offer ideas to inform the study of AI? We discuss these problems in this symposium. Opinions from the participants on the floor are highly welcomed.

Organizer: Ikumi IMANI (Nagoya Gakuin University)

Panelists:
Hideyuki NAKASHIMA (Sapporo City University) On semantics of "AI does not spend its life"
Yutaka MATSUO (The University of Tokyo) Going deeper into semantics with Deep Learning

Yusuke KUBOTA (NINJAL) Is there a future for theoretical linguistics?
