Symposium (June 21st):
Recent scientific and technological related to language and communication: particularly in the field of information technology and artificial intelligence- have brought dramatic changes into our society. How will they impact on future society if the current pace of development continues? How can linguistic researchers contribute to such development? In this symposium, we approach these issues from two perspectives.
In the first part of the symposium, we take a neurolinguistic perspective and introduce research supporting patients with "locked-out syndrome (those who lose their speech communication abilities due to Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis or other diseases)" by decoding speech from brain signals and by generating speakers' own voice by means of speech generation technology. In the second part, we shift to a natural language processing perspective and introduce research frontiers using information technologies such as machine translation and speech recognition in preserving and recovering endangered languages. We conclude the symposium by discussing the future perspectives in these fields and the expected contribution by linguistic researchers.
