On PF Merger: Stylistic Fronting and Object Shiftin Scandinavian

Željko Bošković
(University of Connecticut)

The paper provides PF merger accounts of the subject gap restriction on Scandinavian stylistic fronting as well as the saving effect of VP-topicalization on Scandinavian object shift in auxiliary+participle constructions. The analysis of the subject gap restriction on the stylistic fronting construction is extended to the adjacency effect in Bulgarian wh-questions. The PF merger analysis of Scandinavian stylistic fronting and object shift is shown to provide empirical evidence that adverbs interfere with PF merger and to provide an argument for the multiple spell-out hypothesis.

Improper Remnant Movement

Günther Grewendorf
(University of Frankfurt am Main)

The discussion in this paper proceeds from some crosslinguistic differences in the scrambling of remnant categories as observed in Japanese and German and suggests a new generalization which is intended to cover a broader range of remnant movement phenomena. Remnant movement is understood as movement of an element which contains a trace of a category moved out of that element and results in a configuration in which this trace is no longer bound. It is shown that Müller's (1996, 1998) generalization, according to which a remnant category XP cannot undergo a certain type of movement if the antecedent of the unbound trace has undergone the same type of movement, is too weak to rule out certain illicit cases of remnant movement. I therefore suggest a new approach to the problem of remnant movement which assumes a hierarchy of movement types and states that remnant movement is prohibited unless it is of a higher type than the movement which creates the remnant.

Categorical Subjects

Caroline Heycock
(University of Edinburgh)
Edit Doron
(The Hebrew University of Jerusalem)

In this paper we analyse constructions in Japanese and Modern Hebrew in which an initial nominative phrase is followed by what appears to be a complete sentence, rather than a predicate with an open position. We argue that these nominatives, which we term "Broad Subjects" (also referred to as "multiple nominatives" or "Major Subjects" in the literature on Japanese) are interpreted by virtue of abstraction over a position within the clause, which is occupied syntactically by a pronoun (overt in Hebrew, null in Japanese). Hence this construction does not involve movement of the Broad Subject itself. We further argue that Broad Subjects are necessarily interpreted as the subjects of Categorical sentences, as understood in Ladusaw's (1994) interpretation of Kuroda's thetic/categorical distinction.

Phonological Content and Syntactic Visibility

Ruriko Kawashima
(Meiji Gakuin University)
Hisatsugu Kitahara
(Keio University)

The Minimalist Program provides a number of research guidelines which include what we might call the "minimum design" guideline (seeking to minimize the class of descriptive devices) and the "simple computation" guideline (seeking to reduce operative complexity for computation). In this paper, assigning the latter guideline slightly more prominence, we assume that the reduction of operative complexity is a crucial factor in determining the minimalist design of language. With this assumption, we first review some of the specific proposals concerning the issue of operative complexity, in particular, Chomsky's (2001a) analysis appealing to the presence of phonological content. We then extend the insights from the analyses to Japanese scrambling, specifying the mechanisms for this type of movement and elaborating the relation between phonological content and syntactic visibility. Finally, following Epstein and Seely (2002), we reformulate their relation in strongly derivational terms.

Wh-Nonmovement

Robert Levine
(Ohio State University)
Ivan A. Sag
(Stanford University)

This paper compares transformation-based and constraint-based treatments of unbounded filler-gap dependencies. Careful examination of recent proposals to deal with parasitic gaps in terms of null pronominals and 'empty operators' are shown to be empirically inadequate. Multiple filler-gap dependencies exhibit a uniformity that is naturally explained by the constraint-based analysis we examine, which associates the relevant syntactic and semantic properties of a 'filler' constituent with those of one or more gap positions via simple conditions of identity that must be simultaneously satisfied. Thus far from being 'notational variants', as is often asserted but has never been substantiated, transformational and constraint-based approaches to filler-gap dependencies make radically different empirical predictions. While transformational approaches cannot even adequately describe the appropriate generalizations, constraintbased analysis allows these generalizations to be explained in terms of simple, general, and local conditions of identity.

Why there is an EPP

Norvin Richards
(MIT)

In this paper I develop a general theory of why certain heads require specifiers, unifying the classic EPP cases with the conditions on ellipsis identified by Lobeck (1995) and Saito and Murasugi (1990), and accounting for apparent counterexamples from VSO languages like Tagalog and Irish. The account makes use of Kayne's (1994) Antisymmetry and Chomsky's (2000, 2001) notion of phase; offending structures are shown to be unlinearizable on straightforward assumptions about linearization.

Stylistic Fronting in Icelandic:
A Base-Generated Construction

Peter Sells
(Stanford University)

In this paper I present a base-generated analysis of Stylistic Fronting in Icelandic, assimilating the construction to a sub-type of V2. I argue that the base-generated approach provides an account of many of the properties of Stylistic Fronting that have been elusive under previous (transformational) accounts, and does so without the need for extra projections or extra mechanisms. The analysis is presented in the framework of Lexical-Functional Grammar, which allows flexibility of head-positioning without recourse to movement operations.

Lexical Courtesy Revisited:
Evidence from Tsou and Seediq Wh-Constructions

Wei-Tien Dylan Tsai
(National Tsing Hua University)

This paper seeks to further substantiate Chomsky's (2000) claim that Merge preempts Move. Previous studies have shown that the claim has a great impact on our understanding of A'-dependencies, in that an operator-variable pair must be built before any movement takes place, as encoded by the Lexical Courtesy Hypothesis (Tsai 1999a,b). Crucially, it provides a coherent account of why English, Japanese, and Chinese all employ the (unselective) binding strategy to form wh-questions, while differing in the magnitude of binding according to their distinct morpho-syntactic makeups, that is, lexical in English, phrasal in Japanese, and sentential in Chinese. On the empirical front, the proposal crucially relies upon a correlation between indefinite and interrogative wh-construals allowed in a particular language. Based on data from two Formosan languages, Tsou and Seediq, I argue that the correlation is indeed attested in VOS languages, and that Lexical Courtesy can be maintained cross-linguistically if we allow unselective binding as the optimal strategy of assigning wide scope to wh's-in-situ.
