Morphology and Its Neighboring Areas

Topic 1: Morphology and Grammar (トピック1:形態論と文法)

Construction morphology(構文形態論)

Geert BOOIJ (University of Leiden)(ライデン大学 G. ボーイ)

Word formation patterns can be seen as schemas or constructions (in the sense of Construction Grammar), and complex words as constructs, i.e. instantiations of these schemas or constructions. Constructions and their instantiations are stored in a hierarchical lexicon, with intermediate schemas that express generalizations about subsets of complex words. This explains the blurred boundary between compounding and derivation, and the emergence of affixes. Other arguments for this approach are: paradigmatic word formation, the use of 'possible words' as bases for word formation, and embedded productivity (a word formation schema being only productive when embedded in another word formation schema).

Syntactic constructions also play a crucial role in morphology in that the distribution of morphological elements may be dependent on specific syntactic constructions, as shown by data from Dutch and English.

Topic 2: Morphology and Language Typology (トピック2:形態論と言語類型)

Searching for universals in compounding(複合語の普遍性を求めて)

Sergio SCALISE (University of Bologna)(ボローニャ大学 S.スカリーゼ)

This talk presents a preliminary crosslinguistic overview of the basic features of compounding, their distribution and expected degree of variation on the basis of the Morbo/Comp database. A basic conceptual framework of four important points for the study of compounding from a typological point of view is described, comprising the definition and classification of compounds, the position of the head constituent and the definition of compound type.

I will attempt to extrapolate universal tendencies in compounding with respect to the following list of characteristic features: output categories, input categories, the relation between the constituents, headedness and the combination of categories. A series of universal scales of preference describing the world's languages preferences in the domain of compound formation is proposed.

Topic 3: Morphology and Language Variation (トピック3:形態論と言語変異)

Dvandva [V V] compounds: A linguistic link between Greece and East/South-East Asia(V-V型の並列複合語:ギリシアと東アジア/東南アジアとの言語的な繋がり)

Angela RALLI (University of Patras) (パトラ大学 A. ラッリ)

Dvandva compounds generally involve the combination of two or more constituents of the same grammatical category and of semantically close concepts. Among their structural patterns, [V V] ones are mostly frequent in East and South-East Asian languages, while in Indo-European languages, they are absent or unproductive. However, Greek is an exception, where these constructions appear around the 13th c. AD, and since then are massively produced, particularly in the dialects.

The presentation raises the following questions: (a) Assuming that there is no genetic affiliation or language-contact situations between Greek on the one hand, and East/South-East Asian languages on the other, what is the triggering force for such a morphological innovation in a certain period of the history of Greek? (b) Are there any formal or semantic features which would cause the appearance of [V V] dvandva compounds? (c) What are the conclusions that we could draw with respect to grammar and morphological change?

In trying to answer these questions, I tackle several structural and semantic aspects of compounding in general. I particularly focus on issues regarding Greek compounds, in order to show that the phenomenon we deal with is a language-internal change which is due to rich morphology and grammar optimization.

Topic 4: Morphology and Semantics (トピック4:形態論と意味論)

Semantic effects of left-hand elements on right-hand head structure(右側主要部構造に対する左側要素の意味的影響)

Taro KAGEYAMA (Kwansei Gakuin University)(関西学院大学 影山 太郎)

Despite its robust right-headed structure, Japanese occasionally exhibits curious phenomena in which the left-hand element of a compound or derived word obliterates the head property of the right-hand element, thereby altering the meaning and category of the whole word. Particularly interesting are exocentric compounds like hutop-para(na) lit. 'fat-belly or big-heart' meaning 'generous' and ta-kinoo(na) lit. 'many-function' meaning 'multifunction(al)' which consist of an adjective on the left followed by a noun on the right and as a whole serve an adjectival function. Here the construction is modificational (e.g. huto- 'big' modifying para 'heart') but the meaning is predicational (e.g. hara-ga hutoi '(his) heart is big'), and the same kind of form-meaning mismatch is also attested in a special syntactic construction denoting a person's physical attributes like Mary wa aoi-me o siteiru lit. 'Mary has blue eyes' meaning 'As for Mary, her eyes are blue.' Such form-meaning mismatches support a parallel-representation model of grammar in which morphological/syntactic structures are represented in tandem with semantic structures (Kageyama 1996, Jackendoff 1997, and Ackema and Neeleman 2004).
