Investigating the Future of Finnish Congruency: Focus on Possessive Morphology

NIENDORF Mariya (Purdue University West Lafayette)

The prescriptive construction of possession in Finnish consists of the genitive form of a personal pronoun + suffix; however, in real usage, two other constructions, namely suffix-only and pronoun-only, are also observed. Paunonen (1995) suggested that double-marking is disappearing and is being replaced by the ‘pronoun-only’ variant. However, my findings indicate that the ‘suffix-only’ form is still dominant. Also contrary to Paunonen’s claim that the possessive usage by the same age group remained stable over periods of time, my study shows that one particular age group drastically changed their choice of variants, signifying the possibility that the variation has become a case of ‘age grading’; alternatively, a new change toward the ‘suffix-only’ variant may be beginning to take place.
